Maintenance Guidance

How to maintain your anti-slip decking area

A huge benefit of our anti-slip decking is that the timber decking becomes a lot less dependant on regular maintenance compared with a plain board. Anti-slip decking prevents the impact of moss and algae on your timber decking making your decking usable throughout the year.

Despite less maintenance than a regular timber decking board, we still recommend that users maintain their decking boards regularly to prevent potential issues. We have highlighted a few key pointers below that will help to ensure that your decking areas stay clean and perform their best throughout the year. We work closely with the TDCA (Timber Decking & Cladding Association) who have fantastic guidance on deck maintenance we recommend our end-users follow.

Brushing – Pre-Cleaning

When it comes to cleaning your decking area, its always best to start with a good sweep of your area. Ensure that your decking is clear from any leaves, dirt, debris or other loose substances.

It’s always best to try and sweep when the decking surface is dry which makes it easier to remove the loose build-up. The anti-slip strip(s) in your decking reduce the build up of slippery substances in the grooves and on the surface. The other grooves without anti-slip are there to remove surface water so it’s important to keep the channels clean and clear.

We recommend that you use a long-handled, hard bristled brush so that you can easily sweep away debris.

Cleaning

To clean your deck there are a couple of things we recommend. Firstly, while anti-slip decking significantly reduces the impact of moss and algae build up on the timber decking, we recommend this to be removed regardless to ensure the integrity of your deck boards. The first method is to use a pressure washer to spray the decking. This will remove green build-up and restore the decking boards to back to just timber. Do not use the pressure washer head closer than 20cm from the decking as this can result in damage to the timber. Note that some washers are different so please ensure you check the pressure before proceeding.

If your anti-slip decking has other tougher stains such as grease, oils or other substances, we recommend that you use a more specific decking cleaning product. A list of TDCA approved suppliers can be searched here.
